Privacy

You’re trusting us with your email, maybe your address, maybe your card. Here is exactly what we do with it.

On this page

The short version

  • We collect what we need to run your account, sell the book, ship your copy and send the email you asked for.
  • We never sell, rent or trade your personal data, and we never hand it to campaigns or parties.
  • Stripe handles payments. We never see or store your full card number.
  • No advertising cookies, no cross-site tracking.
  • You can see, correct or delete your data. Write to hello@scorethevote.com.

Who we are

Score the Vote is a project of Super Citizen, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. When this policy says “we” or “us,” it means Super Citizen. It covers this website, the accounts on it, and the email we send.

We wrote it to be read. If something here is unclear, ask us at hello@scorethevote.com and we’ll explain.

What we collect, and why

We only ask for what we need to do the thing you came to do.

Your account

  • Email address, so you can sign in. We email you a six-digit code each time; codes expire after five minutes.
  • Your name, if you give it to us.
  • If you sign in with Google, Google tells us your name, email address and profile photo. We don’t get your Google password or anything else in your Google account.
  • A password, only if you choose to set one. We store it scrambled (hashed), never as plain text.
  • Your state, if you add it, so we can tell you about campaigns where you live.
  • Your email choices: how often you want updates and which campaign alerts you want.

Newsletter sign-ups

If you sign up for updates, we keep your email address and which form you used (the footer, the resources page and so on), so we know what’s working.

Book orders

  • Your name, email address, what you ordered, what you paid and any discount code you used.
  • For printed copies, your shipping address and phone number. The phone number is there for the carrier, in case there’s a problem with delivery.
  • The access codes that come with your order, and who redeemed them. Each code adds the ebook to the account that redeems it.
  • If you arrived through someone’s share link, which account referred you (see Cookies).

Gift codes

If you send a code to a friend, we store their email address and send them one email with the code. We don’t add them to any list.

Donations

Your name, email address, the amount, whether it’s one-time or monthly, and the payment records we need to send you a receipt and keep the books.

The candidate pledge

Candidates who sign the pledge give us their name, the office they’re running for, the jurisdiction, a category, an optional campaign website and a contact email. After we verify a pledge, everything except the contact email appears in the public registry.

Keeping things secure

  • When you sign in, we keep the IP address and browser type with that session, for security.
  • When someone enters a code that doesn’t work, we briefly log the attempt against their IP address and account, to stop people from guessing codes.
  • Our hosting provider keeps standard server logs (IP address, browser type, the page requested) to run and protect the site.

Payments

Book purchases and donations are processed by Stripe. Your card details go straight from your browser to Stripe. We never see or store your full card number. Stripe tells us whether the payment went through.

Cookies

We use a small number of cookies, all to make the site work. None of them are for advertising.

  • Sign-in cookies keep you signed in. They end when you sign out, or about a week after your last visit. A short-lived cookie also protects the Google sign-in step.
  • A referral cookie (stv_referred_by) is set only if you open someone’s personal share link. It remembers which account shared the link, for 30 days, so that if you buy the book we can credit them.
  • A discount-code cookie holds a code from a link you followed, for up to an hour, so it’s still there when you reach checkout.
  • Stripe’s cookies. When you check out or donate, Stripe sets its own cookies to prevent fraud. Those are covered by Stripe’s privacy policy.

We don’t use advertising cookies or trackers that follow you to other sites, so there is nothing for a browser’s “Do Not Track” setting to turn off.

Who we share it with

A few companies help us run the site. Each gets only what it needs for its job, and each is bound by its own privacy and security commitments.

  • Stripe processes payments and donations.
  • Lulu prints and ships paperback and hardcover copies. Lulu gets your name, shipping address and phone number, what to print and, in some cases, your email address for delivery updates.
  • Resend delivers our email: sign-in codes, receipts, gift codes and updates.
  • Vercel hosts the website.
  • Google, only if you choose to sign in with Google.
  • Our database provider, which stores the records described above.

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect people from fraud or harm. These providers may process data in the United States.

What we never do

  • We don’t sell, rent or trade your personal data. Not to anyone, for any price.
  • We don’t give your information to candidates, campaigns or political parties. Score the Vote is nonpartisan and doesn’t endorse or oppose candidates.
  • We don’t run ads, and we don’t use advertising trackers.

Email

Some email always comes through, because you asked for it by doing something: sign-in codes, order confirmations, gift codes, refund notices and donation receipts.

Everything else, like updates and campaign alerts, we send only if you signed up. To stop them, change your choices under Email in your account, reply to any update asking us to stop, or write to hello@scorethevote.com.

How long we keep it

  • Account details, for as long as you have an account.
  • Order and donation records, for as long as tax and accounting rules require us to keep them.
  • Newsletter sign-ups, until you unsubscribe. After that we keep only your address, marked as unsubscribed, so we don’t email you again by mistake.
  • Sign-in codes expire after five minutes. Referral cookies expire after 30 days.

Your choices

Wherever you live, you can ask us to:

  • show you the personal data we hold about you,
  • correct anything that’s wrong,
  • delete your account and the data that goes with it, or
  • stop sending you anything but the email you need for an order.

Write to hello@scorethevote.com from the address on your account. We’ll answer within 30 days. If we have to keep a record (a paid order, for example, for tax purposes), we’ll tell you what we kept and why. You can change your name, state and email choices yourself, any time, in your account.

Children

This site is for adults. We don’t knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you think a child has given us their information, tell us and we’ll delete it.

Security

The site runs over HTTPS, passwords are hashed, payment details never touch our servers, and access to account and order records is limited to the people who run Score the Vote. No system is perfect. If we ever learn of a breach that affects your data, we’ll tell you promptly.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy, we’ll update the date at the top. If a change affects how we use data you already gave us, we’ll email account holders before it takes effect.
